Menopause consultation

ELNA Medical’s experienced team is here to guide you through menopause with consultations aimed at treating and managing your symptoms.

Menopause affects every woman differently. For some, this new stage of life brings its set of unwanted symptoms and, contrary to longstanding popular belief, there are many different and better suited solutions than antidepressants.

At the onset of menopause, the relative decrease in progesterone in relation to estrogen levels is accompanied by fatigue, irritability, insomnia, hot flashes, and problems with memory, attention or concentration. This often resembles premenstrual syndrome, which is so long that it covers a large part of a woman’s cycle. This is sometimes described as perimenopause or premenopause. This phenomenon is fairly common starting in your mid-forties and can sometimes last for several years before menopause actually sets in.

By this time, the body has undergone a transformation and has often experienced demineralization, resulting in osteopenia or the onset of osteoporosis.

Hormone therapy can help prevent this. The symptoms associated with menopause can be alleviated by hormone therapy. The aim of hormone therapy is to treat menopausal women with medication containing the hormones that the ovaries are producing less and less of as women experience menopause.

Coupled with estrogen, which decreases bone resorption, progesterone plays a significant role in the ability to maintain good bone density by stimulating osteoblasts (the cells that help form bone tissue). It is also important to note that without hormone therapy the protective effect of estrogen on cognitive and vascular health will fade during menopause.

Unstable hormonal levels are often accompanied by hot flashes. This is what doctors call a vasomotor symptom, an abnormal response of the muscular structure of the blood vessels. Vasomotor symptoms are believed to be caused by the impact of fluctuating hormone levels on the hypothalamus, the region of the brain that controls body temperature. They usually last two to five years, but in some women, they can last much longer. Other symptoms associated with menopause include:

  • Night sweats
  • Nausean
  • Dizziness
  • Palpitations
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Decreased libido
  • Genital or urinary discomfort
  • Mood swings

Essentially, sex hormones are responsible for maintaining the high metabolism required for reproduction. A drop in sex hormones leads to a significant decrease in metabolism and accelerates the aging process.

When do you need a vaccine?

After receiving a vaccine, it is not uncommon to have an additional dose afterwards. This is a “booster dose”, the purpose of which is to boost your immunity. The frequency of booster doses varies from vaccine to vaccine. For example, the flu shot should be readministered every fall, while a tetanus shot is good for ten years. Some travel destinations also require vaccinations for endemic diseases in other regions of the world.

ELNA Medical offers a complete range of vaccines for adults including:

  • Vaccine against the flu
  • Gardasil
  • Twinrix
  • Engerix
  • Shinrix
  • Tetanos
